News 11 reporter Melissa Zaremba tells us more about potential improvements

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) – The City of Yuma has received more than $100,000 from the Visit Arizona Tourism Initiative Grant to renovate the Desert Hills Golf Course.

It’s no surprise with all that grass, golf courses can use a ton of water, which is why the city of Yuma is trying to find ways to reduce water usage. With the Desert Hills Golf Course updated plan with a new irrigation system.

“The golf course system is 60 years old,” Parks and Recreation Director Jason Nau said.

Director of Parks and Recreation Jason Nau explains why this update is important.

“With an irrigation system as old as ours, we actually run into a lot of water main breaks where there are a lot of issues where water is wasted and not maximized,” Nau said.

The money will be used to test the land so the city can properly improve the location.

“This study is going to help us use today’s modern technologies to ensure that we can keep the golf course in top condition while being very mindful of our water usage,” Nau said.

The Desert Hills Golf Course upgrade plan is still being discussed and nothing official has been set yet.

If the project goes ahead, it will take about two months before the new irrigation system is updated.
