NORMAN, Okla. — A trio of Illinois male golfers were honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Sunday, May 29 when Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Tommy Kuhland Pierce hunting were selected to the 2022 Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team.
The honor is the third all-area selection for Dumont de Chassart, while Kuhl and Hunt each earn the first all-area nods of their Illinois careers. This is the 14th straight season the Illini have placed at least two golfers on the all-region roster.
Dumont de Chassart, the two-time defending Big Ten Player of the Year, also achieved recognition across all regions as a rookie in 2019 and again as a junior in 2021. Dumont de Chassart was a unanimous selection of first-team All-B1G this season, his third career all-conference award. He earned a second individual berth to help lead the Illini to their seventh consecutive Big Ten Championship at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick. After the thrilling end to the championship, Dumont de Chassart received the Les Bolstad award as the golfer with the league’s best average (70.15) and finished the year at 70.08 after the NCAA New Haven Regional to establish a new program record in one season. Dumont de Chassart earned his third collegiate win earlier this season at the Boilermaker Invitational and finished in the top-20 in 11 of 12 events this year, including seven top-five finishes. He finished as Illinois’ first or second finisher in all 12 tournaments, pacing the team in most of the six team tournaments, and had 29 rounds (of 36) tied for the team lead or better.
Kuhl’s all-region selection marks his first and follows his first-team All-Big Ten honor in the 2021-22 season, the first nod to any conference in his career. The Morton, Illinois native has become one of Illini’s best players, ranking second on the team with a season shot average of 71.61, nearly a full shot ahead of his record the previous season (72.53) set as a sophomore in 2019-20. Kuhl was among Illini’s top finishers in four events in 2021-22, second on the team behind Dumont de Chassart. Kuhl closed the season with seven individual top-20 finishes, including a trio of third-place finishes at Hoosier Collegiate, Boilermaker Invitational and Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. Kuhl also finished tied for sixth at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, posting a career-low 65 and a personal best 207 (-9) over 54 holes. He finished as the top Illini at the NCAA New Haven Regional with a tie for 12eand scored 19 of 36 rounds on the season tied or better, tied for second on the team.
Hunt also earns his first All-Region cap after a stellar year for the Illini that led to an all-B1G second-team selection. The sophomore from Hartland, Wis., ranked third on the team with an average of 71.94 strokes per stroke, more than a full stroke before his freshman season (73.20). He recorded top-10 finishes in six of 12 tournaments, including a tie for ninth in the Big Ten Championship. Hunt won the first tournament of his college career at the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in October, posting a then-career-low single-round score of 68 (-4) in rounds 1 and 3, and finishing with a career high 54- hole count 209 (-7). He broke his mark by a single round on Day 1 of the NCAA New Haven Regional, posting a 6-under 64 at Yale Golf Course. He closed as Illinois’ top finisher in two events on the season and tied Kuhl for second place on the team with 19 laps (of 36) tied for or better on the year.
All three artists from all regions are set to return to the 2022-23 Illinois roster, with seniors Dumont de Chassart and Kuhl expressing intent to take advantage of an additional year of NCAA eligibility due to the pandemic. of COVID-19.
