Saenz tops women’s golf at UCF Challenge

ORLANDO – University of Houston seniors Ariana Saenz and Maria Jose Martinez each posted par 72 rounds to lead the Cougars in the final round of the UCF Challenge Tuesday morning at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The tournament was originally to be played with 18 holes each day from Sunday through Tuesday. However, with bad weather looming on Tuesday, tournament officials opted to continue play with the final round starting immediately after Monday’s second round.

The tournament was halted due to darkness, with most teams completing 13-14 holes on the 6,349-yard, par72 course Monday night. Play resumed Tuesday morning with the final holes.

Saenz recorded his third consecutive round of par or under with a 72 in the final round. The Porter, Texas native drained her second and final birdie of the round on her final hole to tie for 37and at 1-less than 215.

Martinez enjoyed his low round of the tournament, thanks to a pair of birdies on his first 10 holes, and tied for 51st at 218.

Second year Delaney Martin tied 57and at 220, while senior Annie-Kim tied 69and at 221. Second year Nicole Abelar finished 87and at 225.

Facing a field with nine of the nation’s top 50 teams, Houston finished 15and with a score of 869.

No. 6 Wake Forest won the tournament title with a score of 819 to finish 14 strokes ahead of No. 34 Kentucky. No. 7 Virginia (837), Charleston (845), No. 12 Auburn (848), No. 40 Michigan State (851), Kent State (852), Miami (Florida) (854), No. 33 Iowa State ( 857) and NC State (859) complete the Top 10.

Carolina Lopez Chacarra of Wake Forest took medal honors with a score of 19 under 197 to finish four strokes ahead of Kentucky’s Jensen Castle. Wake Forest’s Rachel Kuehn finished third at 204.


After the UCF challenge, Houston returns home to host its own ICON Invitational on February 21-22 at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.

From there, the team will compete at MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Country Club in Tucson, Arizona, March 18-20, before competing in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic March 25-27 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, Arizona. Georgia.
