SUFFOLK – Freshman Dan Ailor jumped from 11th place to finish third overall to lead the Shenandoah University men’s golf team on the final day of the Virginia State Intercollegiate Championships in 6,499-yard Sleepy Hole Golf Club on Tuesday.
Ailor’s hot lap couldn’t help the Hornets’ fortunes as SU went from a tie for fourth to seventh. SU shot a 323 in the final round of the 36-hole event for a total of 639. Roanoke College won the team title with a total of 611, 20 better than second-placed Hampden-Sydney.
As the scores soared, Ailor shot a 74 on Tuesday and finished with a 7-for-151 total, just one stroke behind tops Will Clary (Roanoke) and Michael Thomas (Christopher Newport). Connor Christie (82), Logan Archibald (82) and Tanner Sadowski (85) rounded out the scores for the Hornets on Tuesday. Playing individually, SU’s Will Gronlund shot 76 and finished tied for 15th at 156.
Women’s golf: Handley’s Truban finishes 11th
ROYAL BEFORE –Ashley Truban of Handley shot an 88 and ranked 11th among 47 finishers in the VHSL Region 4B qualifier at Bowling Green Country Club’s South Course by 71 on Tuesday.
The top seven have qualified to advance to the state competition, to be held Oct. 24 at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton. Riley Kim of Lightridge, who won the 4C region all season, took first place with a 75. Kim won by three strokes over Jennifer Osbourne of Stone Bridge.
Volleyball: Millbrook 3, Sherando 0
WINCHESTER – Millbrook beat Sherando 25-14, 25-6, 25-18 on Tuesday.
The Pioneers improved to 18-1 overall, 10-1 in the district.
Millbrook executives: Madison Koeller 31 assists, 4 digs, 2 blocks; Ashley Roberts 6 kills, 2 blocks; Rylee Coffman 4 kills, 3 blocks; Kaylee Doherty 6 digs.
