PREVIEW: Men’s Big 12 Golf Championship

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 5 Texas Tech is scheduled to compete in the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship next week at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. The Red Raiders will be represented at the 25th Annual Post-Season Tournament by Ludwig Aberg, Barard Skogen, Calum Scott, Andy Lopez, Sandy Scott and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas.

Tech is at its season-best ranking at No. 5 in the Golfstat rankings after finishing third last weekend at Thunderbird Collegiate following a third-place finish at the Aggie Invitational. The Red Raiders played in nine stroke play events in the regular season, finishing second at Amer Ari and Cabo Collegiate and in the top five in seven tournaments. Tech is looking to win its first Big 12 championship title in program history, while Chris Ward is the only Red Raider to win the individual title that came in 2010. The last conference tournament title for Tech came in 1996 with the Red Raiders winning the final Southwest Conference title before the start of the Big 12 in 1997.

Aberg enters the conference tournament at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and No. 5 in the Golfstat Collegiate Rankings. A junior from Eslov, Sweden, who finished fourth in the Big 12 Championship last year, he’s on the watch lists for the Ben Hogan and Haskins Awards and earned a spot on the international Arnold Cup team. He just finished sixth at Thunderbird Collegiate and has had six top-10 finishes this season, including winning his third collegiate event by winning the individual title at Prestige for the second season in a row. He currently has an average of 70.3.

Skogen is at No. 37 in the college rankings and No. 50 in the WAGR entering the playoffs. A sophomore from Norway, Skogen finished second this season at Maridoe Collegiate and Amer Ari. He took fourth place at the Aggie Invitational and is coming off a final 68 at Thunderbird Collegiate. Calum Scott is a freshman from Scotland who has played in every tournament this season. He earned his first top 10 finish at the Thunderbird, finishing ninth overall after posting 70-66-69 at Phoenix. Sandy Scott will play for the third straight tournament after returning to Valspar Collegiate which was his first event since an injury at the 2020 Maridoe Collegiate Invite. A two-time All-American, Sandy’s scoring averages of 70.2 during the 2018-19 season and 70.5 (2019-20) are the second and third best in program history. Along with his academic career, Sandy Scott played in the Walker Cup and the US Open. He played last week as an individual in Phoenix, finishing with a final round of 1 under, 70.

The Big 12 Championship is a three-day, 72-hole competition that begins with 36 holes on Monday morning. Four out of five low scores in each round will determine the team championship on the 7,467-yard, par-72 course.

Pairings for the first round are based on the most recent Sagarin rankings. The pairings for the second round of day one will remain the same but will change starting tees. The second round is scheduled to start five and a half hours after the starting times for the first round. Pairings for the second and third rounds will be based on the results of the teams from the previous rounds. A prize giving will take place immediately after the conclusion of the championship on Wednesday. In addition to the Tag Team Champion, the top 10 individual finishers and tied for the Big 12 Championship will be recognized as the All-Tournament Team. If there is a tie for the medalist, there will be joint medalists.

Oklahoma State is the two-time defending tag team champion while Texas’ Cole Hammer was the medalist last year. It’s the first time the championship has returned to Whispering Pines since 2016 when the Longhorns won the tag team title, which included 2022 Masters Tournament winner Scottie Scheffler on the roster.

The Big 12 Championship will lead into the NCAA Tournament with regional venue drafts and locations coming Wednesday, May 4 at 3 p.m. CT on Golf Channel. The championship is scheduled for Grayhawk Golf Club May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Tech has reached 19 consecutive NCAA tournaments, including last season when he won the Albuquerque Regional before winning 11and in the overall championship standings.
