JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Carson Brewer had never experienced a golf season like this before.
He knew quite a few players from the Ponte Vedra squad, but this year Brewer was at the forefront of history. Florida State’s junior signing and All-News4JAX Male Golfer of the Year helped the Sharks win their fifth straight state title. This championship, Ponte Vedra’s seventh, broke the tie with Nease and Tampa Plant for the most in Florida history.
Brewer, who transferred from Providence, said the experience was unlike anything he had experienced on the high school tour because of the way things turned out.
“It was my first state championship, obviously. And it was very different. … A very different vibe and feelings in the team just because you have a lot of faith in your teammates and are going to play well in every tournament this season, ”said Brewer. “And I’ve also kind of learned to trust the team and know that they’re going to do their part as well as I do. So a lot of confidence in the team.
Just to earn a place in Ponte Vedra’s top four is a tough task, let alone being the best golfer on the team. Brewer, one of the three new faces of the Sharks (Rohan Singh and Brock Blais were the others) has become this player.
Coach Mickey Leapley called Brewer’s arrival and integration into the squad a “natural transition.” He had the team’s lowest 18-hole average score (71.1) and went to 5 under 67 to win regional medalist honors.
One word Brewer leans on in conversation is trust. And it’s easy to see why. Singh’s average score was 73.3. Blais was at 72.6. Danny Erickson was 71.8 and Jack Barned’s was 74.2. With such low 18-hole averages, Brewer said he naturally had to play his best every time just to get a talented lineup. And if he had a day off, Brewer knew his teammates would react.
Erickson and Brewer both finished T-4 in the State Class 3A tournament with 5 of 149 as the Sharks beat Tallahassee Chiles by six strokes for the title.
“Junior golf, you are on your own. It’s individual and it’s up to you. But like I said, with the team, I had a lot of confidence that the team would do well. So I was almost able to take the pressure off myself just because I could trust the team would do well. And then we would be able to post a good enough score to win.
