Mount Pleasant golfers take second place in SEC Boys’ Golf Tournament

Washington High School scored a 173 at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course for the win Monday in the final Southeastern Conference boys’ golf meet of the season, also taking the season championship.

Mount Pleasant finished second Monday with 176 and was followed by Fairfield (178), Fort Madison (181) and Keokuk (190).

Washington won the season championship with 856 strokes over the five courses. Fairfield was second at 878, Mount Pleasant third at 905, Fort Madison fourth at 994 and Keokuk fifth at 1,002. The Burlington conference member did not compete because he is playing boys golf in the fall.

Mount Pleasant’s Reece Kempker was Monday’s medalist with a 1-under 34 and teammate Nick Matheny was the second medalist with a 39.

Kempker is also the individual champion for the season.

Also playing for Mount Pleasant: Nate Dismang (48), Izaac Zihlman (55), Reece Coffman (56) and Ben Meador (60).

Tyler Wade led Fort Madison with a 42. The other Bloodhounds were Brady Wade (46), Emmett Kruse (46), Brennan Ulik (47), Aiden Pennock (51), and Jordan Simpson (51).

Nick Profeta paced Keokuk with a 43, other leaders were Jordan Sisk (44), Jaydan Thomas (47), Bryor Lindner (56) and Alex Capaldo (59).

WAPELLO 199, COLUMBUS 231: Cooper Garrison’s 45 medals earned top honors and led Wapello to a double win at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Wapello.

Casey Short (51), Mathew McGowan (51), Zach Harbison (52), Dawson Tipps (53) and Austin Meeker (56) also played for Wapello.

Grant Watson led Columbus with a 49. Other Wildcats: Robert Coil (52), Cole Storm (61) and Ryan Coil (69).

MEDIAPOLIS 195, HILLCREST 220: The Bulldogs battled 39 degree temperatures and 20 mph wind to a double win over Hillcrest Academy at Kalona Golf Club.

Mediapolis’ Ben Wolter was the medalist with a 47. His teammates Jonathan Ford and Kamden Stotlar tied for second medalist, each carding a 49.

HIGHLAND 192, W-MU 210: The Huskies defeated Winfield-Mount Union at Blue Top Ridge near Riverside.

W-MU’s Carter Loyd and Highland’s Chase Schultz tied for medalists, each carding a 45.

Also playing for W-MU: Jake Edwards (52), Andrew Brown (56), Griffin Humphreys (57), Isaac Schurr (59) and Nick Crow (74).


BRIGGS MEDAL, DEMONS WINS: Burlington’s Lauren Briggs was the medalist with a 3-of-40 par-40, but Washington won the tag team championship in a Southeastern Conference meet at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course.

Washington won the tag team title with 197 shots and was followed by Keokuk (221), Fairfield (224) and Burlington (235). Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant did not have enough players for team scores.

Briggs beat Washington medalist Makenna Conrad by three strokes.

Also playing for Burlington: Izzi Taylor (51), Edie Blom (72), Dilynn Taeger (72), Elaina Murders (73) and Sofia Ball (77).

Natalie Ames (50), Chloe Ruhl (51), Allison Ames (59), Heidi Rose (61), Anna Hinton (64) and Kaylie Watson (71) played for Keokuk.

Sammi Wibben (49) and Kylie Walderbach (70) played for Mount Pleasant. Fort Madison’s players were Ellanore Wright (67) and Lucy Arevalo (85).

SHAFER LEADS ARROWS: Liby Shafer carded a 53 to lead Wapello to a duel at Heritage Oaks Golf Course. Wapello totaled 216 as a team and won the duel by forfeit as Columbus had no players.

Also playing for the Arrows: Dakota Griffin (54), Olyvia Malone (54), Liv Fuller (55), Bryn Wiley (80) and Sarah Espinosa (86).

HIGHLAND 267, W-MU 270: Highland bordered Winfield-Mount Union at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.,

Ava Hagge and Isabel Kann led W-MU, each carding a 64. Alli Humphreys shot a 70 and was followed by Afton Wilkerson (72), Lily Freeman (75) and Chloe Fisher (80).

Kelci Cerny led Highland with a 62.

BURLINGTON 10, KEOKUK 0: Brian Velazquez and Braden Schoene scored twice apiece to lead Burlington past the Chiefs in a Southeastern Conference game at Calvert Stadium in Keokuk.

Brennen Winke, Brayan Cincire, Matthew Mercer, Sam Mosley, Lucas Henderson and William Steemer each scored a goal for the Grayhounds. Winke and Christian Snyder had two assists each. Mercer and Steemer each got an assist.

Cayden Lowery got the shutout with five saves.

Burlington (5-2, 4-2) plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Davenport North. Keokuk (1-8, 1-5) plays Central Lee on Tuesday.

FORT MADISON 5, FAIRFIELD 0: Xander Wellman scored three goals to lead the Bloodhounds to a Southeastern Conference win at Fort Madison.

Fort Madison’s Mitchell Pothitakis had one goal and four assists. Will Gager scored a goal and an assist. Wellman also got an assist. Goaltender Reiburn Turnbull got the shutout with two saves.

Fort Madison (7-3, 6-0) plays Washington on Thursday.

MEDIAPOLIS 9, WAPELLO 3: Rafael Narciso scored four goals and had two assists to guide Mediapolis to victory at Wapello.

Jack Myers, Lance Ludens, Michael Beekman and Eli Grier each scored a goal for the Bulldogs. Myers, Ben Rice, Braxton Davis and Owen Russell each had an assist. Randy Hines made seven saves.

Daniel Perez scored all three goals for Wapello. Logan Meeker had an assist and Kainoa Seumanutafa made 23 saves.

ND-WB/D10, COLUMBUS/W-MU0: Sophomore Juliana Hill scored four goals and assisted another to lead Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville to a shutout victory at Tackleson Field.

Amelia Schwenker of the Nikes added three goals and an assist. Mallory Lillie, Kaitlyn LaLonde and Aviana West each scored a goal. Lexi Mears, LaLonde, Mei Foster, West and Abby Korschgen each had an assist. Goaltender Ava Rashid got the shutout with just one save.

The Nikes split two Assumption Tournament games in Davenport over the weekend, falling to Assumption 6-0 and beating Dyersville Beckman, 1-0. Hill scored unassisted against Beckman.

ND-WB/D (5-3) hosts Wapello on Tuesday and plays in the Adidas Tournament at the Burlington Regional RecPlex on Friday and Saturday. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union (1-8) plays Wapello on Monday.

BURLINGTON 9, KEOKUK 1: Undefeated Burlington picked up a Southeastern Conference win at Calvert Stadium in Keokuk.

The Grayhounds improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference. They play Quincy Notre Dame on Tuesday and host Fairfield at Bracewell Stadium on Thursday.

Sophie Brown and Kevynn Siefken each scored three goals for the Gayhounds, while Hunter Pender scored two and Myah Rehman added one. Jenna Hentzel made five saves for BHS.

Suzie Whitaker scored Keokuk’s goal. Kyla Muston made nine saves. The Chiefs (3-7, 1-5) host Mount Pleasant on Thursday.

FORT MADISON 5, FAIRFIELD 2: Teagan Snaadt scored two goals and assisted another to lead the Bloodhounds to a Southeastern Conference win at Fairfield.

Natalie Randolph and Anna Sobczak each scored a goal for Fort Madison. Randolph, Alana Simpson and Mary Kate Bendlage each had an assist. Taylor Johnson made two saves.

Fort Madison (5-2, 5-1) takes on Central Lee at Donnellson on Tuesday. Fairfield fell to 0-7 (0-5).
