Men’s golf struggles with brutal wind in California

LA QUINTA, Calif. — For the second day in a row, the UNT men’s golf team drew the short straw in terms of having to contend with brutal wind conditions at the Prestige at the PGA West Greg Norman Course.

The Mean Green battled an unprecedented windy day in the UNT head coach Brad Strackeas did all the other teams that came out in the morning flurry of tee times, as they shot a 311 of 27 over par and entered Wednesday’s final round in 21st place, but ahead of 49th UCLA and just two strokes away. No. 9 Stanford in a team pack.

“The team fought in some of the toughest conditions I’ve seen as a coach,” the UNT head coach said. Brad Stracke noted. “We had gusts of 40mph and more on our tour. The afternoon wave suspended our tour due to wind from 3-4:45 p.m.

“We are ready to compete tomorrow and move up the rankings.”

After the afternoon flurry of teams had their innings suspended for nearly two hours, they were unable to complete the innings before dark and will resume on Wednesday.

UNT was run by second-year students Vicente Marzilio and tucker allen, who each shot 5 of 76 on a day when players should consider themselves lucky to be getting close to par. Marzilio is tied for 21st at 6 over par, while Allen is tied for 33rd at 8 over.

Second year Nikhil Gopal is competing within miles of the team in The Prestige Individual Invitational and is tied for 20th (out of 62 golfers) at 6 over par after 3 of 75 in a row, as Pepperdine’s Ian Maspat leads the field as only golfer under par at 2 under.

“Nikhil finished strong with a 3-over during our tournament suspension a few miles away,” Stracke said.
