GLADEWATER –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men’s Vaqueros Golf Team posted its tournament-best three-under 285 to close out Tempest Collegiate Tuesday at Tempest Golf Club.
The Vaqueros used their last lap of 285 to move up two places in the standings to finish in fifth place with a score of 875 in three laps. The 285 also marked the second-lowest round of the day behind tournament winner Texas State, who posted a final round 281 to finish with a score of 857 in three rounds.
The Vaqueros had a pair of golfers who finished in the top three as juniors Javier Neira Garcia and sophomore in red shirt Taj Sutherland tied for third place. Garcia posted a two-under 70 final round while Sutherland scored a one-under 71, both finishing with a 214 in three rounds.
Garcia and Sutherland finished just three strokes behind Texas State’s Tom Roed Karlsen, who finished with a 211 in three rounds after a final round of six under 66.
Second year Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 29e with a score of 214 in three rounds after posting a final round one par 73. Junior Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi tied for 40e with a score of 228 in three rounds after turning in a final round 76.
Second year in red shirt Sebastien Lundberg had the team’s biggest improvement in the final round as he knocked out nine shots in his second round with a par 71 one-under. Lundberg finished tied for 43rd with a 230 three-turn.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Oct. 17-18 at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State University, at NMSU Golf Course.
