ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Disc golf is a growing sport in the city of Albuquerque and is now attracting competition from out of state. This is not your typical golf game – there is no putter or ball, but the aim is the same. Instead, players are using discs and disc golf is growing in popularity.
âLike a lot of outdoor recreational activities, things have really increased during the pandemic. Disc golf was no exception, âsaid Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Albuquerque. âThere are approximately 50 million rounds of disc golf played in 2020,â said Simon.
President of the Albuquerque Disc Golf Association, Marcus Eye started playing seven years ago. Since then he has worked closely with the city to create more venues for local disc golfers, while attracting competitors from across the country.
This weekend, the association organized its second disc golf tournament at Ladera Golf Course, one of the city’s four disc golf courses. The competition drew more than 100 competitors, some from as far away as Ohio. âIt’s amazing, it’s fantastic,â Eye said. âThis is what I wanted since I started the sport,â he said.
Eye says it’s not only a great opportunity to expand the sport, but also to showcase the city. Simon says that the recent integration of the Disc Golf course in Ladera is good for everyone. âWe are maximizing the use of this course and getting more Albuquerque players to do what they love,â said Simon.
There are Disc Golf courses at three other parks in Albuquerque. Simons says they plan to copy Ladera’s model to other traditional courses in the city.
