Easily the worst thing I’ve seen in golf’ – Fans react to TPC Sawgrass animation

To celebrate 40 years of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, you’d have thought the PGA Tour would pull out all the stops. Especially given the recent and highly publicized speculation surrounding the Saudi Super Golf League threat.

Maybe there’s more to come, but to say what we got in Thursday’s first round was disappointing wouldn’t do it justice. Just when we were crying out for more action on a very disrupted day of golf as well.

Anyway, the bizarre celebration of mixed reality was picked up by American journalist Geoff Shackelford, and you can check it out below:

A brief foray into the responses and it’s clear to see that it wasn’t particularly well received. “Hands down the worst thing I’ve seen in golf in years,” one user commented, while this year’s Presidents Cup captain Trevor Immelman took the opportunity to remind everyone of a infamous gold outfit worn by Ian Poulter many moons ago.

This year’s event boasts a record $20 million purse, as the PGA Tour seeks to stave off the threat of the Saudi golf league rumor mill. Jay Monahan addressed the issue ahead of his showpiece event, telling reporters that “the PGA Tour is moving forward.”

The Tour leader was also asked about comments from six-time Major winner Phil Mickelson, in which he accused the Tour of “abhorrent greed” and said it was “run like a dictatorship”. Mickelson has since apologized for the remarks and is currently absent from the game.

In response, Monahan added that “we will always focus on inheritance, not leverage”, while insisting that “the ball is in his [Mickelson’s] short” in regards to his return to PGA Tour action.

Although unconfirmed, many believe Mickelson may have been suspended, with Rory McIlroy calling for more transparency on discipline.
