Deegan Leads Mediums to Sixth Place in Fall Finals

POWELL’S POINT, North Carolina –The Navy men’s golf team concluded its fall season Tuesday by placing sixth among a field of 16 teams at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. The Mids, who shot their lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday, covered the par 71 Kilmarlic golf course with a par 880 of 28 over (297-294-289) in three days.

Last year, team captain and 2022 graduate Chad Deegan hit par (213) to pave the way for the Mids, when this year it was his little brother Chip Deegan (Fr / Newport Beach, CA) who achieved an identical mark to accelerate the Mids with his first career top 10. Deegan shot the team’s low score in each of the final two rounds, including Tuesday’s final round where he shot a par 69 2-under that featured an eagle on the 12th hole to secure a tie for eighth.

Team captain Keegan Shreves (Sr/Potomac, Md.) was consistent throughout the three-day tournament where he placed 27th with a par 219 of 6 over (72-74-73). Owen Huntington (So/Camas, Wash.) bounced back from a slow start to post 74 and 73 marks in the final two rounds to finish 12-over (225) and 51st. Second year students Noah Nuez (Laveen, Arizona) and Benjamin Valdez (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) both shot a par 229 of 16 of 229 to place 62nd. Valdez opened hard, but spat in the final round (75-75-79), while Nuez hit his stride in the final round where he closed the tournament with a par 74 from 3 over (77-78 -74).

Tournament Notes
• North Dakota State, which had three players in the top 10, won the tournament title by 7 strokes over SIU Edwardsville (298-274-273=845, -7) with their par of 14 under 838 ( 282-278-278).
• North Dakota State (2019-22) is only the second team to win multiple ODU/OBX varsity tag team titles, after Campbell (2015-16-17-18). Eight different teams represented the 12 tournaments organised.
• Nate Adams of North Dakota State hit a 10-under par 213 (66-66-71) to take individual honors against last year’s medalist Drue Nicholas of Drexel, who is ranked second with a par 206 of 7 under (69-69-68). .
