On Saturday, golfers will head to the Copperas Cove courses to participate in a golf tournament benefiting Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, Inc.
When they check in on Saturday morning, they will receive a “welcome bag” prepared by Altrusans on Tuesday during their business meeting at Giovanni’s in Copperas Cove.
The bags consist of various foods and snacks, food stamps and other gifts.
Saturday’s golf tournament, which will be the 19th round, is the main fundraising event for the Cove Altrusa club, explained President Debbie Llacuna.
“We hope to raise a lot of things. I’m hoping for $ 8,000 to $ 10,000, ”explained Llacuna.
Gail Prestigiacomo, one of the club members, chaired the event for several years.
“What we collect here, the profits go to all of our projects during the year,” Prestigiacomo said. “They focus mainly on literacy.
The Cove Altrusa Club provides support in a number of ways, including donating a book to every beginning student as well as every student in first, second and third grade. The club also donates to the Copperas Cove ISD Education Foundation and supports National Night Out.
Another philanthropic activity of the club is to send money to Nepal so that three girls can go to school for a year.
Linda Kaplan, another club member, said the club has experienced success with the money sent to Nepal.
“Some of them now work in their legislatures and are doctors,” Kaplan said.
Currently there are 23 members of Altrusa International from Copperas Cove.
They meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Giovanni’s in Copperas Cove.
