Could there be an early fireworks show at Cascades this weekend?
Many scores were in the red on the medalist’s final round two weeks ago on the usual Quarry-Pine loop, led by a 65, 67, 68 by three of the top four men with a pair of 69s topping the pack senior. .
Many of the same faces will be back Saturday and Sunday as qualifying for the championship flights of the city’s 94th annual golf tournament begins at 7:30 a.m.
The scoring record long pursued after the tournament is 131 by Ike Martin.
Last year’s champions Jace Day (Men), Jim Alexander (Seniors) and Martin (Super Seniors) are not required to play, automatically earning the No. 1 seed when match play begins on July 9.
If all three return, only the top 15 from each group after two qualifying rounds will advance to the top flight.
Day didn’t play in the medalist, but Alexander did, winning the senior title. He had won Seniors City qualifying the past two years and won the medal title, so he is in full swing. Martin won a 12th City title last year, his Super Senior title going with three Senior and eight Men’s crowns.
Full tee times were not available at press time.
