University of Kansas golfer Davis Cooper took the lead in the Watson Challenge on Friday at Indian Hills Country Club, shooting a 6-under 64 that was good for a six-stroke advantage heading into Saturday’s final round at Mission Hills.

First-round leader Zach VanDolah, who started with a 64 on Thursday, shot a 73 on Friday and is eight shots off the lead.

New Zealander Charlie Hillier, another KU golfer, will sit in second place as the annual tournament kicks off for its last 18 on Saturday morning. He shot a 68 on Friday which, paired with his Thursday 67, finds him at 5 cents.

Tom Watson, Kansas City’s legendary namesake for this tournament, improved his first-round score from 74 to 71 on Friday.

A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Watson, 72, has won the 54-hole, three-day tournament five times.

The tournament field for 2022 consists of 50 men and, for the first time, one woman: Overland Park native Gianna Augustine, the first woman to compete in the Watson Challenge.

Founded in 2007, the Watson Challenge benefits Greater Kansas City’s first tee. It typically features the top professionals and amateurs living in the great Kansas City golf community.
