Tom Fazio’s seminal design honored as one of North Carolina’s best layouts

HENDERSONVILLE, North Carolina – Champion Hills, western North Carolina’s premier golf community, announces that its Tom Fazio-designed course is ranked 11th in North Carolina on Golfweek’s prestigious list of “Best Private Courses” in every state.

Considered one of Fazio’s seminal works of mountain golf course architecture, Champion Hills rose two places from 13e in 2021 and is tied with the highly advertised Dormie Club in the West End near Pinehurst. Golfweek’s elite team of more than 850 course reviewers determines the annual selection of the best private courses in the country. Each year, evaluators survey more than 3,600 facilities, scoring each against Golfweek’s 10 strict evaluation standards.

The magazine ranks the best classic, modern, resort and residential courses nationwide and the best private and public courses in each state. Earlier this year, Champion Hills ranked 51st in Golfweek’s 2022 list of the Top 200 Residential Golf Courses, moving up 13 spots from the previous year. It is also ranked at 151st Best Modern Course in the USA

North Carolina is one of the most golf-rich states in the country, with over 600 18-hole equivalent courses and hundreds of notable private clubs, including the famous Wade Hampton Club, Quail Hollow (home of the Wells Fargo Championship of the PGA TOUR), Grandfather Golf and Country Club‘s Championship Course and Old Town Club.

“We are honored that Golfweek continues to recognize the pedigree of our Tom Fazio-designed mountain masterpiece and the impact it has had on the design, construction and maintenance of courses in this region,” said Champion Hills Head Professional Scooter Buhrman. “Hendersonville’s mild four-season climate and the course’s bentgrass allow our members to golf year-round here in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.”

Champion Hills is Fazio’s former course and club, and the legendary golf course architect designed a brilliant course through the heavily forested hills, deep ravines and cool mountain streams of his Blue Ridge Mountain setting. He and his team of shapers pulled ridges into valleys and filled in dips to create “platforms of play” providing golfers with flat terrain amid 350 feet of vertical drop.

Said Fazio of his mountain masterpiece: “Six holes play slightly uphill all the way, but only six. Overall, the majority of the holes play downhill. We’ve done it through the leaderboard and we’ve done it through the transition areas from the green to the next tee.

Delicately balancing strategy and gameplay, Champion Hills offers five sets of tees, including three rated for women. Additionally, “combination tees” placed 15 to 30 yards in front of the forced reaches eliminate stressful shots for higher handicap golfers or those with slower swing speeds. Members are treated to inspiring elevation changes on several holes, including a 125-foot drop from tee to green on the par-3 ninth hole.
