Ascension partners with APGA Tour for a new professional golf tournament in Saint-Louis | St. Louis News Headlines

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The Ascension Charity Classic has only one full tournament under its belt, but on Friday they announced they are expanding with a new partnership that will bring another professional golf event to Saint -Louis.

Ascension is partnering with the Advocates Professional Golf Association, or APGA, to host a new golf tournament in St. Louis.

The Ascension Classic will be played at the Glen Echo Country Club from September 6-9 and will work in conjunction with the Ascension Charity Classic in Norwood during the same week.

APGA’s goal is to bring more diversity to the game of golf by helping to reach young minority golfers in the area. The APGA Tour is a non-profit organization whose mission is to prepare African Americans and other underrepresented golfers to compete and win at the highest level of professional golf, both on the tour and in the golf industry. This is accomplished through professional tournaments, career development and mentoring sessions. Christian Heavens plays on the APGA and hails from the East St. Louis area. He is eager to show kids like him that they can have a future in golf.

“When I was in high school, I used to change in the background, like in the locker room, away from people, to put on my golf uniform so they wouldn’t see me,” Heavens said. . “But as I got older and people started seeing my golf success, it got cool. I was Christian, the next Tiger Woods or whatever. I was the guy doing something with his life. So I show the kids that it’s another route.”
