FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas golfer Brooke Matthews loves fall openers.
Matthews won his second straight season opener, this time in a record-breaking Tuesday at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston in Hanahan, SC
Rogers’ red senior shirt capped a dominant performance with a final round of 64 to shoot an NCAA record of 25 under par in the 54-hole event.
Matthews beat Krista Junkkari of North Carolina by 12 strokes and helped the Razorbacks resist Baylor and win the tournament contested on the par 72 course at Yeamans Hall Club.
Matthews took control with rounds of 63 and 64 Monday on the 6,301 yard route. She is now the NCAA record holder by six strokes for a three round tournament.
The previous NCAA record for a 54-hole tournament was held by Jaclyn Lee of Ohio State, who fired an under-19 shot at the Westbrook Spring Invitational on February 25-26, 2018.
Matthews also won the first Blessings Collegiate Invitational when the season opened last October at Johnson’s Blessings Golf Club.
Arkansas junior Julia Gregg shot a 68 on Tuesday and allowed a 210 under 6 to place sixth, 19 strokes behind Matthews’ sizzle 191. Sophomore Kajal Mistry finished tied for 19th at 215 short.
